Dear Friends;

In the Spring of 2021, the Foundation asked for your support to fund a new ophthalmology microscope and I’m very happy to share that since it arrived, patients have been receiving excellent care from Dr. Jamie Rogers. Dr. Rogers says that the microscope “is nothing
lenses including those with the most up-to-date optical performance for both near and distance vision. The cost of this upgrade is more than $45,000.
Dr. Rogers shared that he believes this upgrade is “the last piece of equipment required to bring our hospital to the complete state of the art in diagnostic and surgical equipment for ophthalmology.”

short of fantastic, providing a massive increase in surgical visibility” and that, in fact, he sees opportunities to expand the scope of patient care.

With your support, the Foundation will fund a software upgrade to the microscope that will offer enhanced capabilities, enabling virtual overlay imaging through the microscope, allowing for more precise placement of intraocular lenses (the artificial replacement of lens), including those that are designed to correct high refractive error (a vision problem that makes it hard to see clearly) and allows for more predictable use of all intraocular

The timing for the upgrade is excellent as, this fall, a new ophthalmologist will arrive. Dr. Douglas Iaboni grew up in Truro and is looking forward to returning to his hometown. Dr. Rogers noted that your support of the ophthalmology department helped convince Dr. Iaboni to establish a practice in Truro.

Dr. Rogers shared that "both myself and Dr. Iaboni are planning to start intraocular injection treatment of macular degeneration, diabetes and other retinal diseases over the next few years. The new imaging equipment allows this to happen, as the previous equipment did not have the capability to support such treatment."

The opportunity to continue to provide excellent healthcare services to your community by expanding the scope of the ophthalmology practice is exciting and, with your help, we can make it happen. Should appeal donations exceed the current amount needed, or if priority needs change, your gift will be used to fund other priority equipment or patient care enhancements for your health centre. If you have recently made a gift to the Foundation, please accept my sincere thanks for your support.

Thanks to the support of generous donors like you, the Foundation will continue to put the healthcare needs of our community first by ensuring that our health centre teams have the tools they require to not only provide excellent care, but to look at opportunities to expand healthcare services. Your support ensures that we continue to invest in the health of our community.

Sincerely,
Sharon Crowe
Executive Director

P.S. Dr. Rogers says that “even though I have done over 26,000 cataract surgeries, when I used the microscope I saw things in the eye that I never saw before! The imaging equipment is state of the art and is enhancing management of diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration."  With the addition of another ophthalmologist and the requested upgrade to the ophthalmology microscope, patients requiring this specialized care will be in very good hands."
